چکیده

The aims of this review are to: (a) describe and interpret structures in valley glaciers relation to strain history; (b) explore how these inform our understanding the kinematics large ice masses, a wide range other aspects glaciology. Structures give insight as deforms at macroscopic larger scale. also provide information concerning deformation history masses over centuries millennia. From geological perspective, can be considered models rock deformation, but with rates change that measurable on human time-scale. However, structural assemblages commonly complex, unraveling them determine is challenging; it thus requires approach geologist. A present glaciers: primary include sedimentary stratification various veins; secondary result brittle ductile crevasses, faults, crevasse traces, foliation, folds, boudinage structures. Some structures, notably relate well measured strain-rates, explain analysis cumulative required. occur all irrespective size, they therefore recognizable streams shelves. Structural approaches have (but yet under-developed potential) application sub-disciplines glaciology, glacier hydrology, debris entrainment transfer, landform development, microbiological investigations, interpretation glacier-like features Mars.

The Motion of Ice Sheets and Glaciers

The distribution of velocity along a vertical line in Greenland is calculated. Almost all the relative shear motion is concentrated at and very near to the bottom, and this result is thought to apply generally in Greenland and Antarctica. It is due to the relatively high temperature of the lowest layers and the strong dependence of creep rate on temperature. The outward velocity being thus almo...

Models for polythermal ice sheets and glaciers

Polythermal ice sheets and glaciers contain both cold ice and temperate ice. We present two new models to describe the temperature and water content of such ice masses, accounting for the possibility of gravityand pressure-driven water drainage according to Darcy’s law. Both models are based on the principle of energy conservation; one additionally invokes the theory of viscous compaction to ca...

Glaciers and Ice Sheets Mapping Orbiter Concept

We describe a concept for a spaceborne radar system designed to measure the surface and basal topography of terrestrial ice sheets and to determine the physical properties of the glacier bed. Our primary objective is to develop this new technology for obtaining spaceborne estimates of the thickness of the polar ice sheets with an ultimate goal of providing essential information to modelers esti...

Conduit Pressure Beneath Glaciers and Ice Sheets

The resistance to sliding beneath soft-bedded glaciers de5 pends on the effective stress N , which is controlled by the subglacial hy6 drological system. While large-scale water transport is primarily through 7 conduits, the effective stress profile beneath most of the glacier base is 8 expected to be controlled by seepage flows through the permeable sed9 iments. Models of the response to force...
